It's really choppy and suuuuuper scribbly because I took like 30 seconds to draw each frame. Please fill in the gaps and gloss over the art with your wonderful imagination! I made it in Windows Movie Maker which is an absolutely evil program =o=

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

It may seem like a common word to us, from using it so much, but it is a fairly recent invention, and it defines the characters created by these two publishers. Think about it as if you made an independent comic to sell and make a profit; and then called it "The Justice League" or "The Avengers". Justice and avenger are common words, anybody can use in conversation but in this context, they would infringe upon trademarks.

To be clear, I believe this "ownership" of certain words and expressions is ridiculous and getting out of hand, but let's face it, that is how the game is played in a capitalist society. Options are: a) License the use of the term (meaning pay for it)
b) Make your own term and trademark it so you own it and can sue anybody who uses it, or
c) Get a good lawyer and claim "fair use"
